Types of Therapy
The purpose of therapy is to help people change their lives. For some, life will present challenges and difficulties that they will not be able to overcome by themselves. Therapy can help people face these challenges and develop more complete, meaningful, and productive lives.
Length of Therapy
I use a brief therapy model – meaning I work with clients for approximately 12 sessions – typically on a weekly basis. Some clients prefer working for less than 12 sessions and some prefer to have more. The length of therapy is discussed at the beginning of our work together and can be renegotiated throughout the therapy process.
Individual Therapy
Individuals face a wide range of emotional distress and can experience a variety of difficulties. When working with individuals, I explore how present behavior is related to past experience. In addition, I help individuals engage in value-directed action through the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an empirically supported approach to therapy.
Couple Therapy
I specialize in and enjoy working with couples in therapy. When working with couples, I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to improve relationships by changing the repetitive negative cycles of interaction that most distressed couples experience. Research on EFT has shown that it can produce long-term changes in couple relationships – something that has been lacking from other couple therapies.
Family Therapy
Families must constantly adapt to a wide range of challenges. To assist families in successfully navigating these challenges, I use an integrative model of family therapy that focuses on family-of-origin influences, current family behavioral processes, and family development across the lifespan. Using this approach, positive change can be accomplished by working with entire families and/or various members of the family.
